Garden Suburb Theatre (GST) perform many of their productions at the delightful Upstairs at the Gatehouse Theatre in Highgate Village London N6. This good size venue is located above a lively Bar and is one of the iconic Pub theatres that are spread around London. These venues deserve our support bringing live theatre into our communities and making it accessible to local people.
Blithe Spirit is arguably one of Noel Coward’s best plays and is a showcase for his wit and prowess in writing a funny tale or, as he described it, An Improbable Farce. It certainly provides the characters with some appropriately indulgent acting and this production made for a highly entertaining evening.
The drawing room of the Condomine’s house was well designed into this space and it was a joy to be reacquainted with Charles, Ruth, Elvira and the eccentric Madam Arcati. All the actors brought these wonderful characters to life and the directors captured the stylised middle classes of Noel Coward’s 1940s.
