I have read that Noel Coward believed that the power of theatre was to entertain, and most certainly, Blithe Spirit is a play that entertains. Although it was written over 80 years ago, like many of the classic plays of that time, it has stood the test of time and is a favourite of many, me, included.

This classic play had been well directed by and they had worked with the actors to develop strong and well-rounded characters and to create some lovely relationships between them. There were some great contrasting characterisations including Ruth’s vulnerability, scepticism and no-nonsense approach towards of clairvoyance, Madam Arcati’s unconventional eccentricity and Elvira’s petulance and manipulation!! The cast delivered their dialogue confidently and in  character, delivering all the humour, wit and light-hearted moments of Coward’s play. The set had been very well designed and the décor and set dressing faithfully suited the story and the period very well. The blocking had been very well devised, and Beth used all of the stage very effectively meaning that everyone was positioned well and the movement flowed very naturally. The play is written in three acts with two intervals, but the decision to have only one interval worked well and gave good continuity.
