Once again, I was fortunate to attend another KYDZ production by this talented group.  This was a great evening’s entertainment - produced, directed and performed by a dedicated team of people.  This society really does bring out “teamwork” in their productions and they go from strength to strength every year – tackling issues that we come across in our day to day lives, and turning them into an impressive production.

This show was a story of 2 halves – “Black and White” in Act 1 – directed and written by Sevi, with choreography by Hannah, Sevi, October & Natallia, and “Seeing Stars” in Act 2 – directed by Georgia, written by David (her dad), with choreography by Hanna, Peter, October and “The Spellers”.    With a total cast of 24, this gave each and every one of the performers a chance to have a “speaking” part in either Act 1 or Act 2...and not one of them was phased by this.  With performers starting at age 9 upwards, this was no mean feat.  Everyone rose to the challenge, was word perfect, and could be heard loud and clear.  It was nice to see that all those with speaking parts were wearing head mics – and it didn’t bother them one bit – total pro’s!

Both pieces gave the audience an insight into “modern day” issues that society has to deal with nowadays.  Tough topics to cover – but they did it so well.

Both performances tackled the gritty story of bullies, scheming, scandals and horrible teachers.  These young performers grasped the issues and really got the messages across through powerful story lines, and very clever musical numbers woven throughout the 2 pieces.

There was a great selection of musical numbers (including “pop” and musical theatre), which were extremely well chosen (and words very cleverly rewritten) to fit the storyline of both pieces.  The musical numbers were performed to backing track – which is no mean feat - and they were faultless in their performance.  There were excellent vocalists in the group individually and collectively, and they really made an impressive sound.

With great “technical” support on sound and lighting it was a great evening’s entertainment.

It was a pleasure that Les Smith, NODA NE Councillor was able to present a 3 year long service award to Matilda who I’m sure has a bright future ahead of her with KYDZ.

It was also sad to hear that Skye & Hannah were performing in their final production with KYDZ – but best wishes go to you both on your chosen paths ahead of you.  Exciting times!
