What a refreshing change it was to see something completely new. Maltby Musical Theatre Group decided to take a risk in presenting the regional premiere of Big, the musical, and the risk paid off.
Big the musical, is based upon the 1988 film of the same name, starring Tom Hanks as Josh Baskin. It tells the story of how a 12 year old boy, makes a wish that he was big on a Zoltar machine and wakes up the next day as a fully grown man.
Andrew Trueman was outstanding as the adult Josh Baskin. His acting, singing and dancing was a delight to watch and listen too. He also has brilliant comedy timing. An exceptional individual performance.
Andrew wasn’t alone in this production, he was well supported by Barry Foster, Paul Seymour and Elaine Demaine.
Nicola Long, as Susan Lawrence displayed great stage presence, and a cracking singing voice.
Fiona Broadhead, once again proved what a talented performer she is in the role of Mrs Baskin, Josh’s mother. Her song ‘Stop time’ was the highlight of the night. Sung beautifully and performed with such emotion, I’m sure there was hardly a dry eye in the house.
Now, where would any production of ‘Big’ be without the children. The children’s ensemble here was first rate. Full of energy and life, I’m sure these children could teach some adults a thing or two about stage presence.
In the role of Young Josh and his best friend Billy, we have two stars of the future. Ben Drew and Reiss Ward performed with a maturity way beyond their years. They sang, danced and acted their way thru this show with ease, and never once let their American accent slip.
Big well done must be given to Anita Boylan, who came up with some very original choreography and to Pete Lane who took on the dual roles of director and musical director, not an easy task, but one which Pete executed faultlessly.
Many thanks to everyone at MMTG for your hospitality. I’m already looking forward to one of my favourites next year, Barnum.
