It must be 30 years since I saw this show - a brave choice for LMS.
Muire McCallion took the leading role of Miss Mona, owner of the “Chicken Ranch” and mother figure to her ‘girls’. Her vocals were soulful and perfectly conveyed the character of the part. A group of beautiful young women played her employees, dancing through some quite suggestive routines, in conjunction with the boys as their ‘guests’. New girls Angel (Rebecca Morgan) and Shy (Joanna Johnston) made impactful impressions with differing characters. Rory Mullan (Sheriff Ed Earl) had a pleasing voice and “laid-back” character. In contrast, Melvin P Thorpe (Simon Quigg) was completely “over the top”, immersing himself in the cheesy character! The Chorus enthusiastically supported his biased attitude. Penny McGonagle was an excellent Jewel – very quiet until she exploded into life in her song “Twenty four Hours of Loving”. Katie Patton showed her considerable talent in the minor role of Doatsy-Mae. The Governor, Senator, Mayor and other smaller roles were all well cast and match-winning team, Aggies, were highly energetic in their celebratory musical number – and absolutely hilarious!
The Set – an interior with 2 staircases and an upstairs landing – was basic and functional. Apart from a couple of inset back-drops, the rest was left to our imagination. I would have liked some indication of where other scenes were set. Costumes were suitable and colourful.
Musical Director/Conductor also played Double Bass and, with 8 other players, a good sound was created. Choreography was lively and innovative and direction was brave and authentic.
