Crowthorne Amateur Theatrical Society’s production of Beauty and the Beast was a vibrant, ambitious and warmly delivered pantomime that clearly showcased the society’s passion, investment and growing confidence in its new home at Edgbarrow School. From the moment of arrival, the welcome from the front-of-house team set a positive tone, and it was a pleasure to meet directors Lu Pike and Dan Winterton, whose enthusiasm for both the production and their company was immediately evident.

Rehearsed rigorously since September, with sessions taking place two to three times a week, this production clearly demonstrated the considerable effort invested by performers of all ages, many of whom are new to amateur theatre. The auditorium was impressively dressed, creating a professional feel, with roses framing the entrance and a particularly attractive show cloth adding to the sense of occasion. The level of technical and creative ambition on display was notable, with clever scenic details, imaginative staging and moments of genuine theatrical magic.

While there were areas that would benefit from refinement—particularly in sound balance and character development—this was, overall, an energetic, entertaining and heartfelt production. It was clear that the audience thoroughly enjoyed the show, especially in a much-improved second half, and that CATS are firmly finding their feet in this new venue and will undoubtedly continue to go from strength to strength.
