I joined the circus and I didn’t want to leave!!
What I witnessed at the Academy Theatre in Birdwell was sensational. As we entered the theatre, we were entertained by members of the cast showing off their circus and acrobatic skills. Very impressive.
Barnum truly is the greatest show on earth and every member of this talented group were exceptional. Now, for Barnum to work you need a wonderful leading man. Louis Sykes - step forward and take a bow. The performance given by this young man was nothing short of genius. His singing, dancing, acting and tightrope walking was so on point that it could have graced the professional stage. For me, Louis’s performance of the title role is the performance of the year.
Rebecca Hall Shine as Barnum’s wife Charity, and I have to admit I got quite emotional during charity’s death scene. Rebecca has a lovely voice and her duet with Louis ‘The Colours of My Life, was a highlight of the evening for me. Louis and Rebecca were very well supported by Casey Heeley (Ringmaster) Rosie Rayner (Joyce Heath) Felix Yates (Tom Thumb, fine acrobatics by this young performer) and Nicole Footitt (Jenny Lind) plus a fabulous and animated ensemble.
Geoff Whitfield (director and choreographer)and Ian Price (MD) have created a show which I will remember for many years.
Congratulations to all involved in this circus spectacular.
