The musical is set in Larkhill Prison and is loosely based on the hard-hitting British television show which ran from 1999 to 2006. From the start, this was a high energy show full of strong characters and some powerhouse performances. As I have come to expect from The Sainsbury Singers, the vocal performances were excellent which combined with the innovative choreography made for a very entertaining show.

The director had successfully balanced the serious topics within the script with the more light-hearted comedic moments. She had clearly worked with all the cast to think about their individual characterisation ensuring that they all understood the subject matter of the musical and their own part in it. She had developed strong relationships within the cast who all worked together very well. There were many interesting directorial elements, not least the prison riot at the end of act one which looked completely spontaneous, but I am sure had been very cleverly designed and rehearsed so that it was executed realistically. There were some tremendous performances from the cast with tremendous vocal performances with all the cast singing with great tuning and lovely harmonies. The MD also led the 7-piece band which gave excellent accompaniment for the musical numbers. The choreography was innovative and interesting, and the dances were very well rehearsed adding vibrancy and energy to the musical numbers.

Congratulations to all the cast and creatives for putting on another great production.
