To understand this show you just have to think Sesame Street for grown-ups and you're there. The residents of Avenue Q are mainly puppets worked by visible puppeteers and the question is who do you watch? I think that you have to watch them both to appreciate the great skill with which the puppeteers worked. It is hard enough to learn moves and reactions for yourself but when you have to transfer them to another being it must take weeks of rehearsing. The whole cast were unbelievable. Their singing was strong and their movements captured the characters perfectly.
The story tells of Princeton, a college graduate, who moves into Avenue Q and tries to find his purpose in life. In the end he and the other residents find that friendship is the most important thing.
A well designed set changed to show the interiors of the houses as well as the exteriors and as ever the excellent lighting enhanced the stage.
A well controlled orchestra didn't drown out the singers which was important as you really needed to hear every word.
There were some very funny moments in this production with interludes for information on TV screens at the side of the stage. These were a little difficult to make out sometimes from the balcony but perhaps larger screens would have been distracting.
Once again a brilliantly directed show with an extremely talented cast.
