Anything Goes opened on November 21 1934 on Broadway at the Alvin Theatre and ran for 420 perfomances with Ethel Merman as Reno Sweeney.
Director Sue Sampson brought out all the fun, music and dancing of this well loved musical making for a very enjoyable evening. Danni Stembridge (Reno Sweeney) gave a lively performance with her superb singing and tap dancing along with her co star Nick Williams (Billy Crocker) who’s singing and dancing adding to the enjoyment. Graham Kirby-Smith (Lord Evelyn Oakleigh) performed a dance routine with Reno which was simply hilarious and added to the enjoyment. Martin Sampson (Moonface Martin), the would be gangster, Lisa Fletcher (Erma Escarlate) and Samantha Bottle(Hope Harcourt) the fiancée of Lord Evelyn all gave very creditable performances. Hope in love with Billy made life very complicated for her mother Giga Phillips (Evangeline Harcourt) who desperately wanted her daughter to become a Lady. The ensemble complemented the great music of Cole Porter and the audience went out humming all the well know tunes. Graham Hix conducted the orchestra at the back of the stage which worked well as part of the ship. Sue Canfield’s dancing routines were well drilled and very enjoyable to watch. Melvin Fryers lighting design worked very well and the audience felt as though they were on board. Stage Managed well by Mike Davall and his back stage crew.
Well done Cody for another great success.
