On arrival in the auditorium due to the décor of the theatre and the elegant lines of the SS America (hired from Weston-Super Mare Op Soc) we felt we were also about to cruise the Atlantic. This sassy musical (in this case the Beaumont version) bounded onto the stage with bevy of beautiful dressed ladies and handsome sailors about to set sail as part of the overture. We then move to a bar where the glamorous Reno Sweeney and Billy Crocker regularly meet up and it was at this point we realised we were in for a total treat. This Reno was the full package, powerful vocals, a great mover and totally in character. Supported admirably by the love sick, cheeky Billy they delivered the first number with panache. Not to be out shone the pocket sized Erma and the highly comedic Moonface also packed a punch with their quick fire patter, great vocals and twinkling toes. The sedate Lord Evelyn with hidden gypsy passion was suitably portrayed as a fish out of water, with his fiancé Hope aloof but gorgeous fighting her urge to fall in love even more hopelessly (no pun intended) with the wrong man. Stalwarts of the society played the ‘grown ups’ with calm authority and the Angels sashayed around causing heart breaking chaos amongst the sailors. Technically this production was strong, choreography perfectly executed by all and musically very melodic, a real hit with the audience….and now they can’t wait for next year.
