Recently transferred into my region, it was certainly pleasure to visit a different venue and view MTS’s production of “Anything Goes”. This was presented in the round, which I understand was first for this company, with the Orchestra on stage behind the performers. This proved to be a very enjoyable show. With some costumes designed for this production and a simple set the show had a very nice look to. The small orchestra sounded were well controlled and the sound balance with the singing was excellent throughout. There were odd occasions when the lighting could have been better, because at times I felt that the performers knew that they were in the dark and were looking to move into the light so that they could be seen. Like all companies MTS would benefit from a few more men, however they do have some very talented performers within their ranks who gave excellent performances. Lord Evelyn Oakley may have looked a little too young but he was outstanding throughout the show. The well rehearsed company were obviously enjoying their performance and they all looked comfortable with each other, which added to the atmosphere. One of the highlights of this show was the superb tap routine at the end of act one.
This was an excellent production but I must be honest and say that because it was in the round, I found it difficult to accept cast members performing with their back to the audience. Being very much of the old school of thought, that by turning your face to the rear of the stage, you lose projection and contact with audience, therefore breaking the illusion that you are trying to create. I appreciate there was audience on three sides, but the vast majority were stage front.
I very much look forward to seeing this talented company again in a more traditional setting.
