As the song goes ‘Oh What A Night’ and oh what a show! Lamproom Musical Theatre Company have excelled themselves with their latest offering, Anything Goes.
I must congratulate the director, Cev Barker, on a fresh and modern interpretation of this Cole Porter classic. With a very clever set, great comedy timing and fabulous lighting , Cev managed to drag this old favourite in to a show that today’s theatre goers would appreciate. It was also nice to see the revised Anything Goes, instead of the Beaumont version, which is the most commonly performed version. The choreography was on point and full of energy. With some great movement and tap routines, Dani Simpson had created some memorable routines. The live band, hidden in the depths of the theatre were under the control of Robert Cooper, musical Director. Robert managed to create some wonderful harmonies, my personal favourite being ‘Public Enemy Number One’
Lee Caddick once again showed what a talented and versatile performer he is, as he takes on the role of Billy Crocker. Full of energy, Lee never let his American accent slip once, and displayed some impressive vocals. In the role Lord Evelyn Oakleigh, LMTC struck gold when they cast David Cooper. David was brilliant in this role getting every bit of comedy out of the part. I’m not sure however, if I’ll ever get over the site of David bending over in those white shorts. Another great performance came from. Sam Hyland as Moonface Martin, or should I say Public enemy number 13. Sam played Moonface so different from any other interpretations I have seen, and this worked so well. Martin Lees was perfectly cast as Billy’s boss, Elisha Whitney. Martin didn’t even have to open his mouth, before the audience were laughing. It only took a look and he had them in the palm of his hand.
For Anything Goes to be a success, you need a great leading lady. LMTC didn’t have a great leading lady, they had an exceptional one, Lisa Kendall played the role of Reno Sweeney and was simply captivating. The leading cast were well supported by Wendy Prew, Kate Robinson and Holly Lees as Mrs Harcourt, Hope Harcourt and Bonnie.
With strong principals, an animated ensemble, this high energy show made this one ship I didn’t want want to get off.
