CADOS’s February production was the ancient Greek tragedy Antigone. It was bold, ambitious and brilliant. Presented in the round, it ensured that the audience were close to the action and immersed in the production. The large structure forming the playing area, with varying heights, enabled the cast to work on it and in it, giving the impression of the structure being a central character of the play; a very clever design.

The large cast used the space and the floor around the structure with confidence and freedom, making tremendous intricate movements that kept the audience’s attention with so much to look at and absorb.

The use of modern music to give audio enhancements to the story was inspired. The chorus’s energetic and frenetic battling with light beams to Two Tribes was fantastic; the procession towards the cave to The Power of Love engrossing, the suicide of Antigone to Stay with Me poignant.

Garvey Shields excelled in his performance and captured the gravitas of the Ruler dictator, Creon. Other cast members helped tell this classical story in an engaging way and the audience left having had a superb theatrical experience.
