The KYDZ Annual Concert is a great vehicle to showcase existing talent, but also to encourage new members and those who are more reluctant to take centre stage. The group performed a range of well-known numbers along with songs from their shows earlier in the year and added to the evening with clever comedy verse/duologues/short scenes. The young people had been heavily involved in agreeing the line-up and directing some of the numbers and their commitment was evident in the work which had clearly gone into preparing for the evening.
The range of numbers used provided great variety to the evening and also demonstrated the supportive nature of the members to each other. The group all have great special awareness and never upstage each other. Sevi Ledgrad had choreographed and arranged a number of routines which could be performed by the whole cast in the limited stage available. There were 25 young people on stage and they all contributed significantly to the entertainment of the audience. I enjoyed all the numbers and short scenes, but a couple particularly stood out – ‘Naughty’ and ‘Bare Necessities’ were very enjoyable and the final songs of the first act really built the atmosphere with amusing guest appearances by some more senior members of the group. Throughout the show the soloist were to a high standard.
The group have the benefit of an experienced technical crew who use the sound and light opportunities in the venue to the best effect. Many of the young performers wore personal mikes and I was impressed that they seemed so at ease with the equipment. The performers all wore smart KYDZ shirts and added the odd item of costume to complement their character - this worked very well.
The enjoyment that these young people feel to be part of this very special group shone through and every single member appeared to having an amazing time. The evening was compared by Skye who lead us seamlessly through the production explaining what was to be performed and the previous experience of the performers. In his concluding speech David described how the show was an opportunity to celebrate the ‘uniqueness’ of the young people involved and it certainly did this – a really special show by a great group.
