ANNIE JR was a terrific choice for a half-term musical; there being enough roles to satisfy this large group of talented young actors and gave the Creative Team flexibility in cast numbers while staying to the story. Lovable orphan Annie has the bad luck to be left on the orphanage steps, being Ginger and also being picked on by the cruel and greedy, Miss Hannigan. Her luck changes when she’s invited to spend Christmas with the wealthy and kind hearted, Oliver Warbucks.
This production was performed in the round with various props/scenery brought on as a change of scene necessitated. The main backdrop was the New York skyline. The props were amazing and included a period wireless (radio) and telephone, globe, locket, Christmas tree, laundry basket, fruit basket (and apples), suitcases and a makeshift radio studio! The props had been well sourced and used with confidence by the cast.
The costumes, hair and make up were excellent. The orphans were dressed in dowdy pinafore dresses or similar, brilliant striped jacket for the radio host and Miss Hannigan had an array of ghastly dresses. Annie’s ginger wig was just perfect. There were many costume changes showing the passage of time and needed for the large cast; orphans, staff at Mr Warbuck’s mansion and other costumes for the adult characters. All the costumes were relevant and neat – where needed!
This was a production that faced many challenges, a short rehearsal period, large and young cast and some complex songs and dances. BUT the creative team did a brilliant job in bringing the show together. There were some strong singing voices from this bunch of talented young actors. Eden Simpson-Hughes shone in the titular role especially when she was sharing the stage with Sandy/Duke, the dog Annie found and grew fond of. Eden managed to sing, move easily and perform exceptionally well while engaging fully with Sandy/Duke. There were good performances all round with some seriously great comic timing from Seren Morris as Miss Hannigan. Choreography was clever and innovative and the entire cast were totally engaged at all times.
Congratulations to all at Limelight Basingstoke for this strong production. There were some very proud parents and friends who left Central Studio uplifted and smiling.
