‘Annie‘ comes to Sittingbourne. Avenue Theatre Productions took on this massive musical, their first time attempting a full blown musical. On my way to Sittingbourne I thought to myself how on earth will this happen on such a small stage. I need not have worried. Such a large cast, I cannot give a review to all and I apologise in advance to all in the cast.
A simple set, changed quickly by the stage crew, costumes were adequate. Jenny Butler (Director) and Janice Butler/Zoe King used every inch of the stage to move their cast around, well done. The Orphans in the care of Miss Hannigan were too clean and wearing makeup why? These should be scruffy dirty urchins! And all those plaits. They did however light up the stage in their musical numbers.
Great Characterisation from Janine Hall as Miss Hanningan, excellent singing and stage presence from Simon Rouse as Daddy Warbucks, Emily Downs playing Grace Ferrel was adequate in this part, Jonathon Cox (Rooster) and Abbie-Mae (Lily) were teamed well. Andy Wise the stalwart of Avenue Productions gave us good characters as Bert Healey and Roosevelt, these were backed up by Becca Brown (Wacky and Mrs Greer), Adam Bicknell as Drake and Lisa Thornton as Mrs Pugh. Spot on hand tapping from Danny Barnes (Bundles) in “Fully dressed’.
Annie (Ruby) what a part for such a young lady, Ruby sang her heart out and a good little actress holding the part even with an untrained stage dog George (Sandy). Well done to you Ruby. Of course I can only review Rudy as the Annie I saw, but I feel sure that Isla was just as good. Choreography by Abbie Mae King was well staged. Paul Gostling showed professionalism in his capacity as Musical Director. To sum up….. Avenue Productions to take a huge musical such as Annie for your first attempt was a very brave move. It did work, and I feel sure you will want to go down this road again soon.My guest and myself enjoyed the evening and thank you for inviting me.
