Throughout my time as NODA representative, for London District 3, I have always found visiting Carlton Theatre Group (CTG) to be both entertaining and a source of high-quality drama. My expectations, on arrival to review this production of Howard Brenton’s Anne Boleyn, were undoubtedly high.

Anne Boleyn was Henry VIII’s second wife and mother of the future Queen Elizabeth I. Following the birth, and three subsequent miscarriages, Henry lost faith in Anne’s ability to bear him a son. By this stage, Henry was courting Jane Seymour but in order to remarry had to first find reasons to end the marriage to Anne...

Susanna Statton is to be congratulated, as Director, for delivering yet another first-class drama production and for gathering such a talented cast. With no set, and only minimal props, focus was entirely on the actors – all of whom appeared both confident in themselves and well-drilled in their individual characters.  Such results are only realised through strong direction, attention to detail and much effort throughout the rehearsal schedule.

I continue to be greatly impressed, each time I review a CTG production, at the lack of any prompt together with the cast’s confidence and word-perfect delivery of their lines. Indeed, the number of monologues, from so many individuals, is always a highlight of each production and impressive to watch.

Congratulations once again to everyone at CTG and those directly involved with Anne Boleyn. This was another excellent drama production and one worthy of recognition.
