A very strong cast of ten told the George Orwell story of Animal Farm in the intimate Telford Studio at Redbridge Drama Centre. It was a tremendous adaptation including many creative ingredients that showed the theatrical flexibility of this group.
The audience were transported into the believable world of Manor Farm; of fields and stables, talking animals, battles and windmills and asked to use their imaginations when prompted to do so.
This play was full of brilliant creative details many from the vision and insight of director Matthew Burcombe who used experimental ways to adapt the story.
This was a genuine ensemble piece with each of the ten working closely together to share the storytelling and act out the scenes. Everyone was on stage for virtually the whole time, either taking the story forward or listening intently to the tale unfold. The cast regularly changed from narrator to character, sometimes by putting on ears or gathering of crutches; other times more subtle with a change of accent or tone of voice.
For a predominantly musical theatre company, Animal Farm was a creative, even experimental, challenge. It certainly worked and ended in a production that everyone involved could be proud of.
