This bestselling novel by Agatha Christie is a well-known and much loved tale which has been performed on stage and screen many times. Although I have seen it on several occasions, I am happy to say that I could not actually remember the ending and so could enjoy the mystery as it unfolded.
The set was exceptional. There was real attention to detail in the room with a very realistic fireplace and a mixture of period furniture and props. The French doors at the back of the stage opened out on to a terrace and a projection on to the back wall provided the necessary seascape.
There was strong direction from Marc Cox which meant that there was a good pace to the play; a real feeling of the characters waiting for the next murder without the piece dragging at all.
It would be difficult to go through each individual character without repeating myself, as they were all superb. There really was not a weak link amongst them and I congratulate them all on very fine performances.
The disappearance of the ten little Indians on the mantelpiece is always difficult to realise in a stage production but this was achieved with great success by a small curtained opening above the fireplace, to enable a perfectly timed member of the crew to remove them one by one.
Costumes, hair and makeup were all excellent and in keeping and everyone had mastered the required 1930’s accents and deportment. Lighting and sound were just right throughout and the stage crew worked well to make sure everything was in the right place at the right time; no easy task for a complex play like this.
All in all, this was a really excellent production with a very talented cast and equally talented production team. Congratulations to all involved.
