For a new youth company this was a very ambitious choice of production when the cast had so many young children in principal parts. Full of colour and interesting characters, it was a very good effort with children who showed a lot of promise for the future.
Freya Silverthorne was very charming as Alice, who sang solo a number of times and seemed to be on stage most of the show. It was a remarkable effort for one so young. The same must be said for Aidan Holmes, as Lewis Carroll, who narrated the story with great maturity. Keziah Croucher came over very well as the memorable White Rabbit singing ‘I’m Late’ whilst hurrying around the stage in a slightly demented fashion, but I think my favourite must be The Mad Hatter, Ruby Hother, who commanded the stage for the wonderful ‘Tea Party Scene’.
Phoebe Brookman as The Queen was everything one expects from that impossible character. Molly Potter was outstanding as the Duchess. I loved the Mouse, the Cheshire Cat and the March Hare who performed with great enthusiasm, as did all the cast with so many characters, too many to name individually. In the main, they were all very involved in the storyline and with such a lot of movement going on there was lots to do for even the smallest and youngest performers. I guess there were some youngsters in the company who were performing on stage for the very first time who will, I am sure, with time gain more experience and stage skills which will show in their ever growing confidence
A simple set with excellent props and a very unusual selection of home-made costumes, many of them made by the children, added a lot to the production. It was a credit to the production company and so good to see a young company doing so well. These young people will carry on hopefully into the senior section in due course and continue the future of a well-established society.
Well done for all the hard work put in by Claire and, I imagine, a good team of helpers, not to mention mums at home rehearsing lines and practicing dance routines. So much effort all round must have been put into this show to enable them to put on such a fun evening. Well done also for all the back stage team’s work and included in that the chaperones that do a grand job in looking after the children throughout the show.
I look forward to your next production very much.
