This little recreation of Alices`s Adventures in Wonderland was probably First Act`s most successful show. The company numbers, albeit brief, were plentiful, with good vocal quality and with the words of each song clearly articulated. The costumes were colourful and the movement simple but effective.
The three main characters merit special praise, particularly Anthony Beaumont, the White Rabbit, Lisa Carter, Alice and Theresa Rose, the Queen of Hearts, not forgetting Ross Forde as the ebullient, well attired Mad Hatter, giving us a spirited rendition of `A Nice Cup of Tea` Ross never disappoints and always creates a believable character whatever it may be.
Lisa made a strong yet winsome Alice, with clear diction and good stage presence. Anthony Beaumont - no newcomer to First Act and splendidly attired - was, as always, well in command of the situation, jollying the audience along and obviously thoroughly enjoying every minute of it. He and Lisa were particularly strong in their vocal numbers which were a pleasure to hear.
However, I must confess that it was Theresa Rose as the Queen of Hearts who caught my attention. She was in command from the start, imperious and altogether exactly what I am sure Lewis Carrol would have imagined such an unpleasant monarch to be. Very well observed indeed with haughty flounces of her frilly skirt to emphasise her impatience.
However, what is so nice about First Act is that everyone gets a special something out of these regular appearances on stage, however small their contribution might be. Which is why, from time to time, it`s such a pleasure to see someone unexpectedly pop up from the ranks to become a mini star. So well done everyone and that really does include all those who give up so much of their time to ensure that having a learning disability need not bar anyone from achieving his or her full potential.
