For their Christmas show this year The Exmouth Players took audiences down the “rabbit hole” of paradox and nonsense with their production of Alice! - a play adapted from the books by Lewis Carroll. All the usual team work and enthusiasm expected from this company was on show, with a large cast giving those less experienced an opportunity to perform alongside the more seasoned members of the group.
With lots of music and song this was a challenging production for a society which is not primarily a musical one, however all the cast rose to the occasion and gave it their best shot. The young lady playing Alice coped well in the role but unfortunately at this performance was taken ill part way through and the Director went on for a while with the “book”, which certainly added an interesting dimension to the performance “Curious & Curiouser!” Happily she was able to return to the stage later and finish the show, and there were some strong supporting performances depicting the other well-known characters from the stories.
The set was simple but stunning – a cascade of playing cards emanating from the branches of a truncated tree – and a lot of thought and hard work had gone into the excellent costumes, some of which must have been a touch on the heavy side. The furniture and props were well chosen, and the original music added greatly to the piece – decidedly different but not without charm!
