It was a pleasure to have visited with WODS Juniors for the first time and, on this occasion, enjoy their 40th production. This version of Aladdin had been written and adapted, for the group by WODS founder Margaret Chorlton MBE.
There’s a definite tendency to measure success in youth productions by adult standards and look for ‘award-winning’ performances. The arts and theatre offer far more than just being on stage. They offer young children the opportunity to develop real ‘life skills’ including team work, self-esteem, communication and relationship skills. Tonight, every child that stepped onto that stage won a victory for themselves. This production was far more than the end product, it was about the courage it takes to turn up to rehearsals and commit to learning the fundamental skills of theatre – all whilst having fun!
Congratulations must first be given to Erin Brindle and Deanne Weller who, as Directors, were responsible for the overall success of this production. With a cast of 37 children aged between 5 and 15, including new members who had not been on stage before, it must have been a somewhat daunting challenge. Moulding this cast into a successful, and very entertaining, pantomime undoubtedly took countless hours of planning and rehearsals to achieve. Your efforts are to be applauded here and I’m certain the children’s parents and families have expressed their gratitude.
It is important to recognise the energy, commitment and quality demonstrated by the entire cast. Each filled their role admirably and greatly added to the overall success of this production. I would very much have liked to have been able to single out more individual performances but with such a large cast it was difficult to take everything on-board. The costumes, colour and overall spectacle were simply fabulous. I was aware that everyone was fully engaged throughout the performance, looked to be having great fun and greatly contributed to the overall success.
Whilst not specifically mentioned in the programme I’d like to recognise those adults who acted as chaperones for this production. Where would Youth Theatre be without individuals who give of their time freely to ensure that our young people have the opportunity to perform in a safe and secure environment?
So, how do you measure what performing in ‘Aladdin’ will mean to this young group? I feel strongly that there’ll be an immediate effect in the children’s’ confidence, ability to communicate and self-esteem. It will also confirm the many benefits of ‘teamwork’ and in making friends. Overall a lifetime memory of a fun and rewarding time!
Congratulations to everyone involved with WODS Juniors and thank you for a lovely evening’s entertainment. I look forward to my next visit end enjoying your future shows.
