P.P.P. Can be justly proud of their production of ”Aladdin”; the acting and singing were superb .Every one of the cast and chorus put their all into it and their energy and verve from the start was electrifying. This with the wonderful scenery, lighting and sound effects plus the technical wizardry with a flying carpet and a magnificently constructed elephant made this a breath-taking experience.
The Costumes were of such a high standard, colourful, glittery and joyful
Aladdin and Princess Mandarin complemented each other very well indeed and sang with great confidence. Spirit of the Ring looked every inch the “good “immortal and Abanazer so convincingly wicked it wasn’t difficult for the audience to boo heartily at each appearance.
Widow Twankey had that great knack of getting the audience on his side, not always easy to do, Twankeys costumes were many, great and comical.
Wishee Washee also had that touch with the audience and was great fun.
Wong and Pong, how lucky P.P.P. are to have this dynamic duo, they know what they are doing and it’s just wonderful to watch them; both they are naturals!
As for the Genie, he did a great job as a very camp spirit, reminiscent of Julian Clarey. His timing was just right.
The Empress gave a warm friendly portrayal along with So-Shi, both did well.
The adult dancers did very well with some great choreography, and as for the red team of junior dancers they stole the show with a great tap dance.
This Panto was well cast, well performed and everything about it was sheer magic.
As mentioned; the technical side was truly outstanding and Aladdin’s cave with the jewels and glittery scarfs on the side of the cave, together with clever lighting was a show stopper. The flying carpet was amazing and the elephant with Aladdin on the top was so unexpected. The music under the direction of John Amery came over very well alongside great. Choreography from Elaine Johnson and Co and of course, that very special ingredient, Iain Douglas’ direction. This was a show that had everything, pace, colour, spectacle, magic, talent, surprise and technical attributes of a very high standard making it, in my book, an award winning show.
Heartfelt thanks to P.P.P. for giving such pleasure. A truly wonderful evening. Good to see the fine old English pantomime tradition performed and produced with such dedication and ability.
