Stage Right Scripts written by Alan P. Frayn are now seen frequently performed on the amateur stage. Quite rightly so as they are guaranteed to be tightly written, true to the story and current due to frequent updating. This society know exactly how a successful pantomime should look, the set designed and constructed insitu was bright and cheery with lots of detail finely painted, add into the mix an impressive Pharaoh’s head, U.V magic carpet scene and a camel with jumping humps, how could they fail! Costumes continued in the same vein all creating an overall ‘happy’ feel to the production. Choreography was a particularly strong focus of the show with some well-drilled, energetic routines which included a colourful dragon dance finished with accompanying flares and an exhilarating Bollywood medley which helped end act one on a high. Cast were chosen well, working hard to build a repartee with the audience, being rewarded with hearty participation from the off. Comedy was represented well by two fairly new members of the society, as Pong and Wong they made a great double act, bouncing of each other faster than a Federer tennis serve! Music choice tended to be ‘safe’ being tried and trusted old favourites, which in retrospect suited the varying vocal ability of the cast. This was enjoyable, traditional fun including the obligatory slapped thigh, but their glory was stolen by the pre-school child invited on stage, who when asked if he had a job, proclaimed with great distain ‘no way’, I’m afraid it got the best laugh of the evening. Never work with etc. etc.
