The show started with the appearance of Abanazar who immediately established himself as the baddie. He was joined by the Sprit of the Ring, and both these actors gave confident performances which continued throughout the show, creating an excellent rivalry. Curtains opened onto a lively and colourful street scene. The lyrics of ‘I Just Want You to Dance With Me Tonight’ had been changed to make them more appropriate, which worked well in this and subsequent songs. This was a real show-stopping number, and there were more chorus numbers of this high standard throughout the show. Every chorus number had huge energy, both in the dancing and singing, and they were a huge highlight in this show. Members of the chorus sang out, danced energetically and projected well, and their enjoyment was transmitted to the audience.

The choreography throughout this pantomime was innovative, original and ambitious, and well executed by the well-drilled ensemble. The chorus singing throughout was consistently excellent, with some nice part singing. The music was modern and perfectly suited to a Pantomime. The panto song was an unusual but effective choice and was well handled. The standard of acting throughout was very commendable. Each Principal entered with great energy, established and maintained character well, and interacted well with the audience and fellow performers. The entrances through the audience added variety, in particular the 2 policemen (who demonstrated some excellent work with the audience) and the Chinese dragon. There were some lovely directorial touches: the sumo-style executioner, complete with axe and blood-stained block; the mischief created by Abanazar in the freeze; the Emperor’s ‘wish’ coming true; the dancing pandas and the dragon; the quite magical flying carpet sequence – I could not see how it was being moved – well done!

Sound quality was good for such a large hall, and sound and lighting effects were good, especially on the Genie’s entrance. Costumes were excellent throughout – I particularly liked the Spirits of the Cave with the lights on their costumes, which were very effective. The finale costumes in red, blue and gold were quite beautiful. Wigs were good and the hair styles of the junior chorus showed real attention to detail. This really was village panto at its very best, and everyone involved is to be congratulated for presenting a highly entertaining and enjoyable production. I can honestly say that I was disappointed when it ended!
