Another offering from this talented Company with their Production of ALADDIN, their 14th Pantomime in the last 20 years, which again received a huge accolade from the audience. Proud Mums, Dads and Grandparents filled Theatr Colwyn striving to get a glimpse of their family member demonstrate their talent on stage. The cast of 50 plus pulled out all the stops to entertain us. The three groups, Academy, Junior Chorus and Senior Chorus, were all well aware of their tasks and gave us a remarkable entertaining piece of Musical Theatre.
The cast was well chosen, headed by an exceptional performance from Danielle Gorle as Aladdin Twankey. Danielle was rarely off stage and from first entrance she was confident in all aspects of the role and oozed personality throughout, faultless in both singing and dancing. The role of Widow Twankey was in the safe hands of Sophie Ehlke-West who fully justified her selection. Emmie Holmes gave a spot on and athletic performance as Wishee Washee, Aladdin’s brother darting on and off the stage, testing the memory of the audience. Jac Gwynne was a very regal Chopesuey the Third – Emperor of China and as we expected articulate in all his script. Princess Balroubadour, Emperor’s daughter was beautifully characterized by Alexa Roberts, her singing was spot on and her voice blended well with Aladdin in their duets. Lovely performance again this year from Maisy Hendry as So-Shi, Attendant to the Princess, who got the show off to a cracking opening scene.
There is always a baddie in a pantomime and there was no messing with the role of Abanazar the Wicked Magician portrayed by Dylan Bourne, one could see that Dylan enjoyed every reaction from the audience for the bad guy, Well Done. Millie Thomas and Leo Dexter-Lowe were perfectly cast as the Sergeant Sour and Constable Sweet respectively, who were responsible for delivering the comedy aspect of the piece which was greatly appreciated by the audience. There were many one liners and minor roles all well covered. At the performance I witnessed, The Genie of the Lamp was played by Michael Bell and the Genie of the Ring was played by Amelia Kearney, but I have it on good authority that the two roles were played by Bethan Jones and Dominique Gorle respectively at the previous performances, all four youngsters shining in their tasks. There was interesting choreography and all chorus numbers were well rehearsed. I must mention the lovely contribution from Junior Chorus Member Isabella Davies – Mills with ‘When I Grow Up’ this stunned the whole audience. Costumes were sparkling to say the least, and back stage crew worked their socks off. There were no pauses with scene changes and no prompts.
The whole chorus of Villagers, Laundry Maids, Emperor’s Attendants and Jewels joined in the finale with an awesome ‘We Will Rock You’ at The Royal Wedding, culminating in a first class pantomime. Thank you all for the opportunity of spending an afternoon with so many talented youngsters. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL CONCERNED IN THIS PRODUCTION.
