The popular story of Aladdin revolves around his rags to riches life as a washerwomen’s son, who despite not being allowed to gaze at a Princess, spies and falls in love with her. Pantomime is probably the most difficult of theatrical genres to get across and even more so for young performers but this group certainly managed it.
Alex Haywood as Aladdin was spot on in his portrayal, cool and street wise. took each situation in his stride and gave us an admirable performance. Alex was clearly happy and relaxed in the title role and offered a very boyish Aladdin.
Kelly Neal as Princess Yasmin played the role beautifully and demonstrated a fine voice and terrific stage presence,
Jonathan Coombs as Widow Twankey was, as always, an exuberant Dame making the most of the comedy and amazing costume changes for every scene and delighted the audience from start to finish.
Rhys Dean as Wishee Washee ked the comedy and audience participation with great enthusiasm combining both local and topical interest. A natural in this role, was full of ‘pantomime’ from start to finish.
Michael Bennett as the evil Abanazar was richly attired and certainly gave the audience plenty to boo and hiss at with gusto every time he appeared.
Nicholas Preeen as Genie was a joy to watch and brought a sense of fun to the role. A nice cheeky persona and was delightful to watch.
Angelique Duff as The Sun Goddess gave a faultless performance and lit up the stage at every entrance delivering the script with superb timing.
The main principals were well supported by company members each one giving the most to their roles.
The scenery and costumes were excellent and very colourful. Sound quality was good for such a large hall, and lighting effects were good, The flying carpet was magical.
