This pantomime was written by a society member, it was the Rapunzel story as we know it but it introduced other fairy-tale characters as well and it worked really well.
The characters were as over the top as all good panto cast should be. Mother Gothel (Jon Stow) was a great villain and had the audience booing and hissing, and the audience in the packed venue loved every minute. Nanny Nightingale (Maxine Stow) was another joy to watch. Prince Freddy( Marianne Bowen) posed and “slapped her thigh” as a modern teenager with 2 adoring Fans and was cast against a caring but downtrodden Rapunzel ( Hazel Guppy).
The songs were from a wide genre and I must mention Red( Rhianna Thomas) who gave a lovely rendition of Sondheim’s “Into the Woods”. A very difficult number to perform, especially to a backing track.
A very well written and enjoyable panto, everyone appeared to enjoy it, especially the children who had their photos taken with some of the characters at the end.
One observation, made by my partner, who attended with me and joined in all the banter…. oh yes he did… he would have liked more “it’s behind you”, it goes to show you can’t please all the people all of the time.
Well done I really enjoyed it.
