Honiton have compilation productions off to a tee, being extremely stylish and very, very classy! A platform staged with three black chairs and one white, spot lit to take place of honour, set the stage for the immaculately dressed performers, their material chosen to give an evening of twenty three fabulous melodies from some of the West End and Broadways finest musicals such as ‘Matilda’, ‘Chess’, ‘The Book of Mormon’ and ‘Cabaret’ amongst the fourteen featured.
Various compares had obviously completed their homework to gold star standard, giving funny and concise information linking the show. Rehearsed to perfection, all performers sparkled with some outstanding pieces, notably ‘Seasons of Love’ from ‘Rent’ performed with clear part singing and spine-tingling solo pieces and the extremely difficult ‘Hello!’ from ‘The Book of Mormon’ which was sung with perfect timing. Special mention must also be given to the choreographer who staged and moved the dancers to create tight and very polished pictures without encroaching on the quality of singing.
The young chorus were a real bonus to the show; their performances from ‘Matilda’ and ‘The sound of Music’ gave an assurance that the future success of this society is sound! A supportive quartet of musicians was placed at the back of the stage allowing an excellent sound balance for most numbers, although younger soloists were overpowered at times.
This was a creative production which provided the perfect vehicle to showcase individual talent within the society, job definitely done, as the audience delighted in this ‘Music of the Night!’
