There was no 'dilemma' for me when invited to see Leeds G&S revue, as I love to see something so new and I was there for the first performance! This production had been imaginatively conceived and written by one of the members, Sarah Case - and also directed by her with help from the entire company!
The premise of the entertainment was to imagine the Annual General Meeting of leading characters from the Gilbert and Sullivan portfolio - but it really was a veiled and heartfelt look as to how to keep the G&S traditions alive in the changing world of musical theatre. I do not profess to be a G&S buff, but that did not matter, as this was an amusing piece designed to remind us all of the satirical and fun content that these two talented gentlemen gave to Victorian/Edwardian society and still reverbrates down the years - I was, at times, amazed that so little had changed, especially on the political scene in the current climate! The entire cast of principals revelled in their beautiful singing and mastery of the comedy. The hall contained seating at tables, each with an operetta name, with a playing area down the middle and on the stage (this had a table, behind which were the 'Committee' in charge of proceedings!). This closeness to the audience can be quite daunting, both for the cast and the audience, but the cast carried it off with panache - we were even treated to audience participation in a couple of the numbers, which delighted a full house of patrons! The costume department had worked hard to dress the characters in a mixture of traditional and modern garments and footwear. I was so pleased that each cast member's hair and make-up was detailed and correct - this so rarely happens these days. Props had been well thought through - I loved the fact that each table had a few 'props' which the audience were encouraged to use during the proceedings - as directed by the cast themselves! The musical arrangements had been expertly organised by Jonathan Drummond - he also directed the singing (in costume!). I must also mention the hard-working pianist, Katharine Morrish. It was a real joy to hear such lovely voices, clear diction and superb acting which did not waver.
I am certain that this revue will do much to revitalise the work of Mr Gilbert and Sir Arthur and well done indeed to Sarah for her richly-imagined 'Dilemma'. I am sure that other G&S groups will be very interested in this 'take' on the future success of these wonderful operettas - they should never be allowed to 'fade away'! It really does 'matter, matter, matter'!!
