There is no better way to celebrate a Society Anniversary than with items from previous shows. This was a non-stop cocktail of entertainment from this prestigious Company performed to a professional standard.
The show flowed from start to finish with 19 items from musical theatre in Act 1 and 18 in Act 2. Opening with ‘Be Our Guest’ from Beauty and the Beast, the show soon took on a fast pace with no stops in between items. There was something for everyone, solos, duets, chorus numbers and slick dance routines. Much research had been put into this well-balanced programme, and we were treated to musical numbers from nostalgic shows such as Showboat and White Horse Inn to the more modern shows such as Titanic and Hot Mikado. The twelve children involved charmed the audience as they supported the soloists with ‘Getting to Know You’ and ‘Do-Re-Mi’ – lovely touch.
I cannot praise highly enough the Choreography, in particular ‘Slap that Bass’ from Crazy For You in the first Act, and ‘42nd Street Tap’ which commenced the second Act – absolutely spot on. Chorus were disciplined and well rehearsed and the happy atmosphere on stage filtered through to the audience. Musical Director Richard Davies, was commissioned to write a piece to celebrate RADMTC’s 75th Anniversary entitled ‘How Do I Begin’ which was performed by two male members of the cast to the delight of the audience. Ladies and Gentlemen were attired in black with Ladies sporting coloured touches to their outfits. Superb direction from Claire Jones gave us a great evening’s entertainment, and certainly night to remember.
