The Penelopiad
Sinodun Players, The Corn Exchange, Wallingford
Two days in the life of an elderly and nearly immobile resident of a Rest Home, on stage throughout the evening, may seem a mundane subject, but cleverly crafted by Bob Larbey (his first stage play, written in 1985 after huge successes with TV series), sensitively directed and with a fine lead performance it proved a winner. Alternating soliloquys and conversations with the five other believable characters we saw, the resident showed how despite his physical shortcomings he could enhance their lives and his own through humour, friendship and memories of the record-breaking Middlesex County Cricket Team of 1947.
