One of William Shakespeare’s more light-hearted and well loved plays is under the excellent direction of David Balfour, assisted by Emma Davis with Tricia Beckett doing the choreography, and Di Buck as Producer. A special mention must go to Rob Davis and Brian Buck for the excellent set.
The play is well cast and set in the 70s, I liked the ‘Night Club’ idea with 70s disco music being heard every time the clubs doors opened. The Athenians are David Balfour and Tracy Davis playing (Theseus & Hippolyta), Donna West & Jack Barnett (Hermia & Lysander) and Ian Jenkins & Debbie Murray (Demetrius & Helena). Di Buck (Philostrate) and Steve Davis (Egeus). They all played their parts very well and there are some nice characters.
The Mechanicals add some light and comedy to the play: Richard Sansom (Peter Quince), Vic Milne (Nick Bottom) - the donkey mask was excellent. Shawn Condra (Francis Flute), Steve Davis (Tom Snout), Brian Buck (Snug), Helen Young (Stavling), along with the dog, have some great moments and I liked the play within the play - this scene was very funny.
The Fairies again have some nice characters amongst them and the colourful costumes fitted the 70’s theme very well, I especially liked Richard Barnett (Oberon) in his white John Travolta suit with Michele Arkle (Titania) in Agnetha Abba gear. Hannah Marks played the mischievous Puck; the other fairies played by the younger members of the group did very well (Lauren Philips, Effie Celada-Robinson, Tilly Emm and Ella West).
Well done everyone for a great summers evening’s entertainment.
