I know I have said this before and I say it again, but I do get worried when amateur companies attempt Sondheim. Having performed in and musically directed many Sondheim shows I know the difficulties involved and the time it takes to perfect! Fears, however, were allayed as this was a good production by Swansea AOS.
The set was good and the costumes delightful. More could have been done with lighting, but the studio is a little limited.
There were some lovely performances and Bruce Miller as Pseudolus carried the show admirably. Mark Rees was a suitably manic Hysterium and Richard Lawson gave a good performance as Marcus Lycus. Graham Rowlands was an excellent Senex and captured the character perfectly and Claire Hanney as Domina was wonderfully masterful and 'domineering' (fabulous voice too!). Philia and Hero were the perfectly naive young couple and played well by Lynne Bird and Daimon Williams. Erroneus often steals the show with his 'times around' and Roy Evans played him convincingly. Simon John gave a good performance as Miles and his two foot-soldiers were very funny indeed. Richard Sommers was a hillarious Eunuch and now I come to the star of the show... The legs of Gymnasia! Jean Buckland was the owner of those legs and being of a perfect vintage stole the show in her costume as she entered, the audience audibly gasped in delight! All the courtesans were great and I was thoroughly entertained by the production. Congratulations to you all.
