Warmly welcomed by Vara Williams and the rest of the front of house team, we were shown to our seats in this small yet atmospheric theatre and settled in for the evening.

A Fine Bright Day Today is the story of a woman, Margaret Harvey, who lost her husband to the sea and never re married, bringing up her daughter, Rebecca, alone. Many many years later l a mystery American, Milton Farnsworth, arrives who is on the trail of an American Artist Franklin Bowden Broome (a fictional character). The daughter encourages Milton to take lodgings at her mother's house (after convincing her mother to take a lodger) and the play followes the unrolling relationship.

This three person play using the small set with great efficiancy on the small stage, is engaging, sad and yet humorous and the characters are superbly played by Maria Head, as the mum Margaret, Marie McPherson as her daughter Rebecca, and Geoff Dodsworth as the American Milton Farnsworth. The set, designed and lit by David James, was well laid out, based in Margaret's kitchen and was fairly static, but with enough room that the actors could move around it well and use the props to good effect. The diction from all three was crystal clear and allowed the plot to run and ensure we fully understood the story line. Lighting, again, simple and effective. A heartwarming play, one i enjoyed very much and one that the director David Baldwin and the cast and crew should be very proud of. Thank you Chesil Theatre and well done.
