The great thing about mounting a concert is that it gives every member taking part the chance to have a big sing - and sing out, they did!
In the beautiful surroundings of the Leeds Parish Church now re-named the Leeds Minster, Leeds G&S Society presented a Spring concert of diverse entertainment - very much to the fore were choruses, solos and quartets from their G & S repertoire, plus songs from West End musicals, performed in recent years by them in the Studio theatre at the Carriageworks and some from their 'wish-list'. The company of 36 singers (14 gentlemen, marvellous), demonstrated their strong vocal talents under the direction of their Musical Director, Michael Williamson, in whose experienced hands got the concert off to a fiery start with a selection from 'The Pirates of Penzance'.
Comperes Katie Lister and Richard Pascoe guided the audience through the repetoire with ease and professionalism. Principal players with the company (too many to name) sang (and acted out!) some dazzling musical items, all with strong voices and clear dicton - the Minster reverberated with the sound of excellent singing from everyone. I know that Leeds G&S are famous for their vocal gymnastics and this concert gave them every opportunity to show them off!
I must mention the superb accompanists, whose playing was so sympathetic to the company - Katherine Moorish and Kate Dooley.
It must have been quite daunting to produce this concert in such an auspicious venue, particularly when the audience is on full view to the singers, but it never showed and everyone left at the end of the evening full of praise for a wonderful evening's entertainment.
My congratulations must go to all.
