Christmas arrived early at the Cordes Hall in Sunninghill with Spotlights Musical Theatre Group’s presentation of A Christmas Carol, the Musical, followed by a delightful concert of Carols, all led by their amazing irrepressible Musical Director and wonderful piano accompanist. It was a joy to hear this lovely choral society sing so many familiar songs in arrangements tailored to their voices with beautifully delivered descants and harmonies.

This was also the first-time post Covid that the Group had staged their performance, and a combination of beautiful Dickensian costumes, well selected projected images and good use of the auditorium fore-stage created a lovely sense of the period. The familiar characters from Charles Dickens’ classic story provided opportunities for everyone in the choir to play at least a small role while the central role of Scrooge was charmingly played by the society founder and director of the musical.

The Evening once again showcased the singing talents of this wonderfully disciplined community choir and the best moments were a full stage for the big Ensemble numbers like the ghostly “Link by Link”, the joyous “Fezziwig’s annual Christmas ball”, and the moving “Christmas Together”. The grouping and movements for these numbers created lovely festive pictures as they sung with such gusto, joy and crystal-clear diction. The mulled wine and mince pies completed the evening and sent us all home full of Christmas spirit ( past, present and to be) and a broad smile on our faces.
