A Chorus Line first appeared on the Broadway Stage in 1975 and tells the intriguing story of a group of young hopefuls auditioning for their place in a production on Broadway. They each get to tell their story of why they want to dance and reveal their insecurities and childhood memories, these are all intertwined with ensemble numbers.
The open stage reveals a minimalistic set with just four large manoeuvrable mirrors. The turning of these to their plain backs for some scenes and back again, was hardly noticeable so well-done stage crew. Bruce J. Williams’ excellent lighting design was key and created some good effects. Sound was fine for the most part but because I was seated near to loudspeakers, it tended to be a bit overpowering at times. Costumes were leotards for the girls and mainly tee shirts and trousers for the boys, which is what you would expect for dancers attending an audition but what lovely glittering costumes for the finale. The 10-piece band placed at the back of the stage did a good job under the direction of MD Daniel Moulton. The ensemble and individual numbers were superbly choreographed by Karen Heaslewood and Megan Allaway and highlighted the enormous talent amongst the cast.
It would be unfair to single out any of this cast as every person in the audition line up, acted, danced and sang their hearts out. Each performance was convincing and credible with the characters being extremely well defined and they all remained in their character throughout. The person in charge of the auditions was Zach (Tim Taylor) who was very convincing, able to draw each auditionee into telling their life story with their moment in the spotlight.
Director Rebecca Clow and the creative team brought out the best in this talented cast and can be very proud of giving us, the audience, an enjoyable experience.
