I think the most iconic song from “A Chorus Line” for many will be “One” (singular sensation, thrilling combination) – and how aptly do these words describe this incredible production.
The whole production was slick, polished and oozed professionalism from this super talented cast from start to finish.
Co-directed and choreographed by Amy Horton-Atkinson and Ted Oxley-Kirk, they brought to life the gritty backgrounds and reminiscences of 17+ people auditioning to get into the Chorus Line.
Each and every one of the cast on stage gave 100% (and more) for 100% of the time – never letting characterisations slip for one second, even when the focus of the production was not on them.
From the moment we entered the theatre, members of the cast were also “arriving” through the auditorium and made their way into the audition. It was an ingenious introduction to the cast, as each and every character began to play out their role in preparation.
The set was brilliantly designed – with huge “rehearsal” photo’s of the cast adorning the stage. Complimented by superb sound and lighting (Sound and Light Concepts Ltd) the whole overall effect of staging was stunning.
It is impossible to single out principals and make comment on their performances as individuals, as this truly was an outstanding production in every from every single performer on the stage (and also around the auditorium, as Zach “the director” worked his way around the stalls and circle – barking direction at the auditionees). The choreography and routines were spectacular and so well devised, portrayed and brought to life. They really told the story (which can so often lack in productions these days).
MD Catherine Sweet was in complete control of her brilliant band playing this complex score. I think with the exception of possibly 8 or 9 minutes she was on her feet conducting the talented musicians and performers to perfection throughout the entire 2 hour production.
Audition costumes – by the cast –were excellent, and really complemented their characterisations. The finale costumes (Molly Limpet’s Theatrical Emporium Ltd) were stunning and certainly gave the “wow” factor to the final number “One”.
The Society will be performing a “truncated” version of this show at the forthcoming NODA North East Gala weekend in Bridlington in April – I, for one, cannot wait to see them bring this to life again. The audiences are going to be thoroughly entertained!
Congratulations to everyone involved in this production – both on stage and off. It truly was a “Singular Sensation” that audiences will be talking about for a very long time!
