Thank you for the invitation to your production of A Bunch of Amateurs, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The play centres around Hollywood A lister Jefferson Steel who has arrived in the UK to perform King Lear in Stratford Upon Avon. However, upon arriving he discovers that this Stratford is in fact a sleepy Suffolk village and, rather than appearing with the Royal Shakespeare Company he will be sharing a stage with a bunch of amateurs who have invited him in a desperate bid to save their theatre from closing.
In her debut as a director, Julia did a great job to bring a funny entertaining, and engaging production to the Henley stage. Working with this experienced cast, she developed the comedic aspects of the play and succeeded in bringing these to life, drawing plenty of laughs from the audience. The play was well cast, and the actors developed their characters so that they were natural and never contrived or farcical. Every cast member gave of their all, working together with the production team to create a great piece of theatre. The production was supported by a great set and lighting with some well- timed sound effects including lots of seagulls to reinforce the Suffolk location and some authentic heavy rain and thunder.
