When Jefferson Steele, the Hollywood A-lister, arrives in Stratford to play King Lear with the RSC he is rather confused and frustrated to realise that his agent has booked him into the Amateur production of the Shakespeare play by the Stratford Players in Suffolk. Rehearsing in a barn and staying at Mary’s B&B is not what this star of Ultimate Finality – 4 is used to. And so the context is set for a funny, well-written comedy by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman

Loughton Amateur Dramatic Society (LADS) gave a great night’s entertainment, making the most of the funny lines and ridiculous plot with some fine acting and characterisation. There was a good mix of characters some with more depth than others and the clever split set enabled the pace to keep moving.

At the end of the play Jefferson Steele asks us amateurs, why do we do it? We all have our own personal reasons but I suspect we can all at least agree with one of the characters Denis, who answered ‘Well, it gets us out of the house”.
