“A Bunch of Amateurs” written by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman, is about a drama group in the sleepy little Suffolk village of Stratford. Times are hard and in an attempt to save their little community theatre, the committee decide to engage an American Actor from Hollywood to play King Lear in their next production.

Jefferson Steel, a faded Hollywood action hero with a massive ego,  who arrives in England thinking that he is going to be performing at the home of Shakespeare in Stratford upon Avon.  He soon clashes with the enthusiastic members of the drama group, who have to put up with his mega star attitude  together with his demands and expectations.

I thought that this was an excellent production that was very enjoyable and because of the  superb script it was  very funny in places. Many of us in the world of amateur theatre may had seen some of the hilarious scenarios of this play acted out in front of  us several times

The cast members all gave excellent, totally believable portrayals of their characters and I thought the egotistical  Jefferson Steel was an outstanding performance.  The delivery and timing was  generally very good and the odd prompt did not spoil the flow. Although there was lots of laughter there was still light and shade to the performance which I found to be very emotional and touching in places.

The simple set was very effective and I thought that the play was well directed to suit this venue.

It was nice to be part of the very appreciative audience who clearly enjoyed their evening.   Well done to all concerned
