Newcastle’s NI premiere was headed by three talented ladies – Emma Nugent as Violet, Orla McCrickard as Doralees and Emma-Jane McKnight as Judy. Emma’s comic timing was superb and a favourite musical number was “One of the Boys”. Orla fitted well into the ‘Dolly’ role; Emma-Jane had a powerful voice, used to effect in “Get Out and Stay Out!”. Their plotting together against their boss was hilarious. Their fantasies – Dance of Death, Cowgirls Revenge and Potion Notion – were well conceived. Played by Jay Walsh, Hart was every inch the tyrannical boss with lecherous intent for his female staff. Although not a strong singer, his acting was impeccable. His personal secretary Roz  (Careen Starkey) teased all possible comedy from her role! Ciaran McCormack took the role of Joe with confidence and an impressive singing voice. Maria, Katy and Margaret (Erin, Melissa and Sheila ) were office co-conspiritors, all portraying different characterisations – particularly Sheila who, on every appearance, stole the scene as the office lush!  Other small roles and the Ensemble contributed many colourful characters and added to the overall atmosphere. All helped to move props with speedy efficiency. The composite set of general office, boss’s office, Ladies toilets etc was clever. Lighting and Sound were both effective; costumes and wigs not always in period.

Director Neil put together an old style comedy very well received by the audience. Act 1 was overly long but I must blame the writers for that. Choreography by Timmy was innovative and well rehearsed. MD Gareth’s 11 piece orchestra which was hidden back-stage sounded great.
