When arriving at any show, the first impressions that you have, rarely let you down.

The excitement of the audience entering the welcoming atmosphere and the general buzz of expectation. All of this and more was to be found on the opening night of Christchurch Music Societies production of “9to5 the Musical” at the Congress Theatre Cwmbran.

My first impressions did not let me down. From the opening number, the pulsating energy of the show did not stop. The choral numbers, directed by Choreographer Amy Kempson were inspirational and the very clever use of a split-level staging gave every member of the chorus that centre stage look.

The staging, in every way, was a triumph. It looked good., it worked perfectly, and it gave a perfect view to the audience. My congratulations to John Parfitt, as Stage Designer. Having the orchestra on stage has its own difficulties, but again, the results were perfect. Myvcongratulations to Bethan Ballam and the orchestra. The excellent musical accompanimentvwas a major factor in the success of the show.

I must make a special mention. For the work done by the backstage crew. Having never believed in ghosts, I can only say that your success came from the basis that you appeared not to be there. My grateful praise to Connor Charlton, Steve Duthie, Liz McNish and David Middleton.

Our centre character, Doralee Rhodes was played in true character by Sarah Fradd. The audience always has very pre-conceived ideas as to this character and Sarah did not let them down. Sarah owned the stage in true Dolly style and did not falter throughout. My congratulations on an inspired performance.

Kate Summers gave a very good performance as Violet Newstead, the much-overlooked office manager. Great interaction with son Josh played by Gethin Haywood.

The new girl Judy Bernly played very convincingly by Holly Haywood, gave a lovely characterisation, with great facial expression. An excellent solo number. Congratulations, well done.

A good performance by Ben Middleton as the lovesick Joe and Mike Bobbett as Dwayne.

Congratulations to Dianne Ebbo in her characterisation of Roz Keith, the dowdy ,pompous, controlling secretary and her transformation to Sexy Diva. Not an easy role to play but very well done.

An outstanding performance by Bryn Middleton as Franklin Hart Jr. It was lurid, bombastic, and utterly despicable; and they are compliments. Great characterisation, very well done.

My respect to the whole chorus; you were exceptional, especially in the “freeze” scenes. I have never seen them more professionally executed. They looked magical.

A superb production. My congratulations to your production team. You should be very proud.
