9 to 5 – The Musical is a fun energetic show which the large cast of Barking Music and Drama gave the full Dolly Parton treatment to. The big hit number starts and finishes the show but in between are some excellent crafted songs and some very funny lines. The plot sees the overlooked and underestimated women working for Consolidated Inc. overcome the extreme prejudice they experience and rise to the top at the expensive of the 1980’s sexist Franklin Hart. Under excellent direction from Faye Spooner, Barking MAD navigated these tricky issues for a modern audience very well and landed a knockout success.

The singing and dancing were first class as was the staging, props and costumes. There was plenty of cameos and smaller parts for the cast and some excellent characters for the women of the company to portray. In Bernice Docherty Barking MAD had an excellent Doralee/Dolly which had a big nod to Ms Parton. It takes confidence and good ole country understanding which Bernice gave in powerful singing and great acting.

This is a fun musical which the audience will feel they know but offers so much more than the film.
