Working nine to five in an office has seemed almost retro itself recently. Add to that the fact the film
9 to 5 was made in 1980 and you may well wonder just how relatable the story is today. But as soon
as the cast burst on stage to the eponymous theme tune in the film-turned-musical at The Lyric
Theatre, you realise that it doesn’t matter. The story of three secretaries who plot revenge on their
sleazy, chauvinist boss, Dolly Parton's hit musical takes us with them on their journey as they join
forces to put the world to rights, or their office at least.

Daniel Williams does a stellar job as creepy CEO Franklin Hart Jr, with his lecherous behaviour and
sexist jokes. His American accent is faultless, but his brilliantly well-timed expletives are so drily
delivered they can only be British. He resists the temptation to over-act the part, even when hanging
from the bed tied up, and it's this that makes his performance all the funnier. He seemed to really
enjoy it!

There is great chemistry between the three main female characters Violet, Doralee and Judy.
Gabrielle Roberts is perfect as the jaded, but not defeated 'senior supervisor' - Violet. She has just
the right mix of surface bitchiness and deep-down goodness. For me her performance was floorless
this evening, great job.

Abbie Williams’ Doralee has Dolly written all over her. Her great vocal and accent are true to
character, and she made me smile, every time she was on stage. It was quite clear that she loved
every minute of being in 9 to 5.

It's the naive Judy (Nadine Turk) though, whose husband ran off with his secretary, who steals some
of the funniest lines 'I just miss Dick!' Nadine carries this role very well and compliments a very
strong trio of leading ladies.

Now who couldn’t mention Victoria Evans as Roz! This role desperately needs an actress with great
comic timing and Victoria delivers on all fronts! She had the audience in the palm of her hand to the
point someone cheered when she came on stage. Her Heart to Hart was great and a real comedy
showstopper.

The role of Joe, played by Jordan Williams is one that I have always felt needed more stage time.
Especially when you have Jordan in the cast. Let Love Grow – the duet between Joe and Violet is
gorgeous, yet it is the only time you hear Joe in a solo capacity. Jordan has a great vocal, stage
presence and timing.

CAOS always have a strong ensemble and tonight was no different. In particular a young man who I
first saw in Grease with CYO – Bryn Richards who played Violet’s son – Josh. Bryn is just great on
stage, he has that natural stage ability rarely seen but always remembered. Supporting the cast were
Gareth Morgans as Dwayne, Olllie Goulstone as Dick and Sean Tapp as Goldsworthy. Small but
integral roles to the musical and very well cast.

The ensemble gave it every they had after what has been a very long lay off due to Covid. They were
having a ball up there and if this musical needs anything, its energy!

Now, it is known that I am a stickler for sound and music! Being an experienced MD comes with its
hazards, but I loved the full band on this musical, led well by Sarah Kirby. My only critique is that
more time (if possible) could be spent balancing the band. I was missing a lot of winds & bass during
the first half, but this improved second half. Overall, the band was tight and complimented a great
production.

The set was awesome and flew seamlessly into position adding that professional touch to the show.
The crew handled the scene changes well with cast support, therefore removing the requirement for
blackouts. The lighting, designed by Jonny Rees was excellent, with beautiful washes complimenting
the set and scenes.

A huge congratulations to Director - Luke Spencer, Choreographer - Fran Chester and MD - Sarah
Kirby on another roaring success. Following Addams Family was going to be tough, but 3 years in the
making was worth the wait.

I am really excited for what comes
