The story I knew, having previously enjoyed the film but the stage version was a new experience. It was fun and full of energy with excellent commitment from every member of the cast.
The three exceedingly well cast leading ladies were strong and worked well together with some beautiful harmony singing. It was interesting to see their characters grow from downtrodden girls in the office to strong women confidently running the company. Also interesting to see their friendship develop once they realised that Doralee was a victim of the "wicked" boss. The opposition provided by The Boss and Roz was just what was needed. Always great to play the baddie! The Office Lush was fun and greatly enjoyed by the audience.
There were some well-choreographed company numbers. Again lots of energy and good harmonies. I have heard the music is not easy but that didn't show.
I liked the hospital scene with actors demonstrating all manner of medical conditions as they walked, or staggered across the stage, all without upstaging Judy, Violet, and Doralee as they searched for the body.
This show involves numerous scene changes but these were undertaken by members of the cast, almost imperceptibly, and with back projection and minimal use of furniture the action was able to continue seamlessly.
Lighting was at all times suitable for the scene, with good use of the follow spot. The sound was mostly well balanced. Just at the beginning, it was a tad difficult to hear the dialogue but only briefly. Either my ears or the sound quickly adjusted to a good level.
The music, composed by Dolly Parton, is not particularly memorable, apart from the title number, but it was well played and very enjoyable.
NADMCS are fortunate to have their own costume store. Both costumes and makeup were appropriate.
A very entertaining, well-directed show enjoyed by a capacity audience.
