Wimborne Musical society had flooded social media to promote their production of “9 to 5” and as they realised that their show week was in the midst of an extreme heat wave, it amused me to note a change in their publicity to advertise the fact that the Tivoli Theatre had air-conditioning. I had been to two other venues earlier in the week and had felt very uncomfortable because of the warm evenings. Therefore it was indeed a great pleasure to be able to sit in the wonderful cool auditorium of the Tivoli, relax and enjoy show.
Apart from knowing that Dolly Parton was in the film version and she had a major hit with song 9 to 5, I had no idea what the show was about. The storyline is a typical American farce, but with humour and great music it makes a stand for equal rights for women in the work place. I really enjoyed this excellent production. Super choreography and vocals, great characterisations, I thought that the principal roles were all outstanding, and they were supported by a very slick and enthusiastic company. The set was very impressive and the many changes work well without causing any major distraction
The small orchestra did an excellent job, I would have loved to seen a pedal steel guitar amongst them, to bring out the Country and Western sound, but I can appreciate that it would have been an extra unnecessary cost. I felt that the director certainly knew how to make this show work, the comedy was very funny and yet the show was also very moving. I thought that it was something special. Top class.
